A Weekend Escape into Himalayan Serenity

Nestled in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, the Kareri Lake Trek offers a serene getaway through lush subtropical pine forests. The trail winds through chir and chilgoza pines, with low canopies that host abundant birdlife, making it a delight for nature lovers. As you ascend, the landscape transitions into rocky grasslands along the glacial-fed Nyund Nallah, providing stunning views and a refreshing companion throughout the hike.

At 9,613 ft, Kareri Lake sits near the snowline, surrounded by majestic Dhauladhar peaks. Its crystal-clear waters and tranquil setting make it a perfect weekend adventure, especially for beginners seeking an alternative to popular Himachal treks like Triund or Kheerganga. Campsites and food options along the route add to its accessibility, and the valley transforms into a snowy wonderland from December to February.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Dharamshala to Reoti

Distance – 25kms drive and 8 kms walk, Hours – 10-12hrs

Starting at an altitude of 5,905 ft in Dharamshala, the trek to Reoti takes approximately 4.5 hours and ascends to 8,038 ft. The trail passes through the charming Kareri village and winds through mixed pine and broadleaf forests. These forests are alive with the chirping of birds like the black drongo and the red-billed blue magpie. However, the dense undergrowth and pine-needle-strewn paths can make the trail a bit slippery, so caution is advised.

After 15 minutes, the trail curves upward to meet a metal road, which you follow for about 10-15 minutes until Nolli Bridge. Just before the bridge, the trail veers off into the forest near a small shack selling soft drinks and snacks. Continuing through the forest, you come across another shack after ascending some stone steps near a small waterfall. This is a good resting point, as Reoti is about 1.5 hours from here.

The journey continues with a crossing over Nyund Nallah via a metal bridge, where the forest gives way to open grasslands along the stream. Shepherds with their flocks dot the slopes, and birdwatchers can enjoy sightings of warblers, redstarts, brown dippers, and even Himalayan griffon vultures soaring overhead. After a short 10-15 minute walk from the bridge, the picturesque Reoti campsite awaits, nestled on the banks of Nyund Nallah. The serene surroundings provide breathtaking views of the valley downstream. Spend the night camping here, enjoying warm home-style meals at the nearby shack and the calming presence of the flowing stream.

Day 2: Reoti to Kareri Lake

Distance – 6 km, Hours – 5 hours, Altitude – 11,115ft.

Set off early from Reoti (8,038 ft) to reach Kareri Lake, located at 9,613 ft, before descending back to Kareri village (5,905 ft). The journey takes approximately 5.5 hours, with the ascent to the lake lasting around 1.5 hours. The trail begins as a paved path, interspersed with unpaved sections that are navigable around the boulders lining the upstream banks of Nyund Nallah. Reach the Kareri Lake campsite and advance to the lake itself.

As you approach Kareri Lake, the stream becomes more powerful, hinting at its glacial origins. About an hour from Reoti, a campsite and shack mark the last stop before reaching the lake, aside from occasional Gaddi huts used by nomadic shepherds of the Kangra region. A rocky crossing over the nallah leads to a series of stone steps that ascend to the hilltop, where a Shiva temple stands. Beyond the temple lies the stunning Kareri Lake, its crystal-clear waters reflecting the towering Dhauladhar mountains on the opposite bank. The trail to Minkiani Pass is visible between these imposing peaks, adding to the allure of the setting.

Spend time soaking in the tranquil beauty of the lake and the breathtaking mountain views before beginning the descent.

DAY 3- Return to Dharamshala.

Distance – 14km trek and 25 km drive, Hours – 3-4 hours and 1.5 hrs.
